Paperchase - PURPLE TEAM: Task 1

Legal Encyclopedias

We have two major legal encyclopedias: CJS and AmJur

  • C.J.S. (Corpus Juris Secumdum) - In print, Legal Reference, main floor
  • AmJur (American Jurisprudence) - Electronically, through Westlaw or LexisNexis
  • We also have Illinois Jurisprudence in print

Primary uses:

  • General introduction to a legal topic
  • Find citations to cases and other useful materials on your topic
  • A great place to start your research

Arranged like a general encyclopedia with topical articles in alphabetical order

As with all legal materials, terminology can be tricky; use the general index to determine proper search terms

  • Ex. Defamation - See: libel and slander

Task One : CJS

Find the CJS in the Legal Reference section. Look up the following topic: Torts

What is the subtopic at II (Roman numeral 2)? Write that subtopic on your worksheet.
