Collection development is a collaborative effort between faculty librarians and campus faculty, staff, and students to ensure that the educational and research needs of the university can be satisfied with the library resources. This collaboration requires frequent communication between those developing the curriculum and the librarians charged with managing the library collections.

UIS Brookens Library maintains its collections in accordance with the American Library Association (ALA) and other library standards. The Library’s collections must also meet criteria defined by the Higher Learning Commission as well as numerous other accrediting agencies to which the University's degree granting programs are subject. It is essential that the Library’s collections are equal to the stringent evaluation requirements of the various accrediting bodies.
